PRIORITIZING OUTREACH AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITIES
FOR THE SEATTLE DEPARTMENT OF NEIGHBORHOODS
2011 COMMUNITY SURVEY
The goal of this survey is to ask Seattle’s community members which Seattle Department of Neighborhoods' outreach strategies and community engagement activities should be our highest priority. In tough economic times, our department, along with every other, needs to take a hard look at the services and activities we provide for the Seattle community. In line with our mission of civic participation, we are looking to you – the people we serve – for your ideas on how to prioritize our outreach strategies and community engagement activities to maximize limited resources.
Definitions of Outreach and Community Engagement:
Outreach: Activities intentionally employed to make contact and potentially develop working relationships with specific individuals and/or groups for purposes, but not restricted to, sharing information, education, or service provision.
Community Engagement: Activities that intentionally enable community members to effectively engage in deliberation, dialogue, and action on public issues and in the design and delivery of public services. Developing and sustaining a working relationship between government and one or more community groups to help both understand and act on the needs or issues that the community experiences.
About Us: The Seattle Department of Neighborhoods (DON) provides resources and opportunities for Seattle community members to build strong communities and improve their quality of life. With more than 180 neighborhoods in the city, the department plays a key role in helping neighbors develop a stronger sense of place and build closer ties with their communities and local government. In short, DON’s goal is to connect people, communities, and government.
