Purchasing Survey

West End Food Co-op Purchasing Policy Survey

The Co-op is dedicated to creating a strong and sustainable local food system. WEFC initiatives are part of other important sustainable food movements which have made Ontario, and especially Toronto, a world leader in changing the food system towards a more equitable and healthy system.

As we launch the Co-op’s new food hub this year, this survey is designed to hear from you, our diverse stakeholders, about our purchasing priorities: what kinds of food should we focus on, what are your priorities in a complex and rapidly changing food system? We have heard from a number of you over the years during the community food mapping and other co-op member engagement, but are looking to renew and expand on that input.

Many thanks for taking the time to fill out this survey—and good luck on the draw for our new market bag once you complete it!

1. The West End Food Co-op is a multi-stakeholder co-operative with four membership classes: Eaters, Producers, Workers, and Community Partners. Which stakeholder group best represents your relationship with the co-op?
2. We are interested in establishing priorities for sourcing our groceries. The Co-op Board and members have generally identified local food as a priority. How do you define local food?
3. What percentage of your food purchases are local food?
4. Would you buy more local food if the following occurred (check all that apply)?
5. What can the Co-op do to improve awareness of local food in the west end?
6. For the Co-op to offer a full range of foods, and for economic viability, it may be necessary for the Co-op to carry non-local and/ or non-organic staples.

Please check all the following staples that the Co-op should carry even if not available locally and organically.
7. There may be some situations in which you would buy conventional imported food over a local food option. Please let us know if you would be likely to choose conventional food over local if:

The price of the local option was twice as much
The price of the local option was 50% more
The quality was better for the conventional imported food
The product is processed (not fresh produce, meat or dairy)
