Currently, many residents of the Cloquet Valley do not have access to high-speed Internet service at all. Still others have access to it through phone companies like Frontier and Qwest/Centurylink or through satellite providers. However, Internet speeds currently offered by these companies do not meet current standards for “Broadband” access, limiting customers’ ability to use services like streaming video, Voice Over Internet Phone (“VOIP”), telecommuting, telemedicine and online education. And, as more public services and commercial software become available online in the future, we risk being left behind if we do not have higher speed Internet access.
The Cloquet Valley Broadband Initiative is a group of your neighbors who are actively seeking to improve Internet access for people in our area. A first step is to measure the current level of interest in higher speed Internet access. We’d also like to identify people who are interested in this issue for the purpose of providing further information.
