1. Information Sheet

 11%
You are being invited to take part in a research study on the prevalence and perceptions of sexualized behaviours directed towards strangers and non intimately involved acquaintances. Before you decide, it is important for you to understand why the study is being done and what it will involve. Please take time to read the following information carefully and contact either me or my supervisor if there is anything that is not clear or if you would like more information. Take time to decide whether or not you wish to take part.

Why is this study being carried out?

This study is being carried out as part of my course requirements, and with the aim of finding out more about men and women’s sexual behaviours, experiences, and perceptions.

Do you have to take part?

You can decide whether or not you want to take part. If you do decide to take part, you must check the box below to show that you have read this information and give your consent to take part. If you do decide to take part, you are still free to withdraw at any time and without giving a reason. A decision to withdraw at any time, or a decision not to take part, will not affect you in any way.

What will happen if you take part?

You will be asked a series of questions. First you will be asked a few demographic questions. This will be followed by 10 questions regarding your experiences of sexual advances from strangers and acquaintances. You will then be asked 8 questions about your own sexual behaviours directed towards strangers and acquaintances. Finally there will be a series of questions asking about your frequency and levels of alcohol consumption. For each question you will be given a choice of responses and asked to select the one you agree with most.

An example question is:

When thinking about the past 6 months, please indicate how often you experienced the following behaviours directed at you by a member of the opposite sex (either a stranger or someone you were not in a dating or sexual relationship with):
Someone touched you in a way that made you feel uncomfortable? (never/about once a month/2-3times a month/about once a week/more than once a week)

How long will it take?

It may take up to twenty minutes of your time to complete the survey.

Will your participation be anonymous?

Yes. You will not be asked for any identifying information such as your name, and therefore confidentiality and anonymity will be ensured.

What will happen to the information that you give?

Information will be stored securely without any participant identifying information attached to it. The data from all participants will be analyzed and the results reported in a final written up report.

Will you benefit directly from this research study?

Although you might not benefit directly, we hope that this study will help us further our understanding of the nature, prevalence and tolerance of sexualized behaviours in various social settings.
