BACSAC 2010: First Complaint and Responding to Disclosures of Sexual Assault

1. BACSAC Meeting: Registration

Training with Suffolk County DA’s office on the First Complaint Doctrine and responding appropriately to disclosures of sexual assault.

The new First Complaint Doctrine allows only the first person who hears a disclosure of sexual assault to present that information in a criminal case. Many staff members of colleges and universities are wondering how to train RA’s and other staff members who are likely to be the first people that students tell about an assault. At this meeting, we will present ways to document the disclosure while still respecting the confidentiality of survivors.

Sponsored by BARCC (Boston Area Rape Crisis Center) and the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office.
Co-sponsored by Northeastern University:
Office of Prevention & Education at Northeastern O.P.E.N. and the Campus Center on Violence Against Women.

Presenters:

Holly Broadbent, Assistance District Attorney, Chief of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Units, Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office

Peggy Barrett, Director of Community Awareness and Prevention Services, BARCC

Meg Bossong, Coordinator of Community Awareness and Outreach, BARCC

BACSAC: The Boston Area Campus Sexual Assault Coalition is a network of staff and students from area colleges and universities coordinated by the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center (BARCC). BACSAC provides a forum for staff and students who are interested in working to create a safe environment free of rape and sexual assault. BACSAC provides opportunities for skill development, collaboration, and networking. In our efforts to prevent rape and sexual assault and to improve the care of survivors, BACSAC allows us to learn from one another, to share resources, and to lend support to our colleagues.
