Armstrong Park Survey

Armstrong Park Survey (please email info@pufap.org with comments)

The Louis Armstrong Park is located within the historic Treme neighborhood of New Orleans. Opened in 1980, the park is a communal place of cultural reflection created to preserve the site of Congo Square, the historic meeting space of slaves in the 1800s that gave birth to jazz as we know it today. The park contains Congo Square, the Mahalia Jackson Theater of the Performing Arts, part of the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park (including the Fire House, Rabassa-De Pouilly house and Perseverance Hall No. 4) and the Municipal Auditorium. First opened in 1929, the Municipal Auditorium was built to seat 8,000 people. Over the years, varied performances and tenants have utilized the Auditorium, including Harrah’s Casino, New Orleans Brass Hockey Team, The New Orleans Jazz Basketball Team, The Jackson 5, Elvis Presley, the Fat Boys, boxing and tennis matches, Mardi Gras Balls and countless school graduations. The facility has been closed and inoperable due to damages sustained during Hurricane Katrina. The Park only recently reopened on November 18, 2011. As the City of New Orleans prepares to receive community input on the future operations and management of Armstrong Park and the Municipal Auditorium, this survey will serve as an additional forum for the public to engage in the discussion of their redevelopment. This survey is formulated by the People United for Armstrong Park in conjunction with Dillard University and University of New Orleans in its effort to bring more activity and hasten the Park’s revitalization, and is not affiliated with the City of New Orleans.
