HOCKEY CANADA - FAIR PLAY CODE - CALL COACHES
It is the intention of this pledge to promote fair play and respect for all participants within the Simons Valley Hockey Association. All coaches must agree to and observe the principles of Fair Play.
1. I will be resonable when scheduling games and practice remembering that young athletes have other interests and obligations.
2. I will teach my athletes to play fairly and to respect the rules, officials, opponents, and team mates.
3. I will ensure all athletes receive equal instruction, discipline, support and appropriate, fair playing time.
4. I will not redicule or yell at my athletes for making mistakes or for performing poorly. I will remember that children play to have fun and must be encouraged to have confidence in themselves.
5. I will make sure that equipment and facilities are safe and match the athlete's ages and ability.
6. I will remember that children need a coach they can respect. I will be generous with praise and set a good example.
7. I will obtain proper training and continue to upgrade my coaching skills.
CRIMINAL RECORD SEARCH
The Simons Valley Hockey Association requires a Calgary Police Service (CPS) criminal record clearance as one of the tools to ensure the safety of its players. The clearance is valid for three years. Only new coaches to the Association or those with expired clearances will be required to apply for a criminal record search, the cost of which will be covered by Simons Valley.
The Association is sensitive to the personal nature of this information. The Association requires the delivery of "clear" or "no issues" report. Any other report is directed to the coach applicant to resolve with the CPS. This usually, but not always, is a result of another person with the same name having issues. In addition, certain issues reported have no bearing on the safety of the players. If the issues cannot be cleared up with the CPS, the coach applicant may (but is in no way obligated to) bring the matter, in person, to a special subcommittee of the SVHA board of directors which will consist of the President and Vice President only. The subcommittee will hear the coach applicant, and determine the coach applicant suitability to coach for SVHA.
NCCP COACHING CERTIFICATION
The Minor Hockey Association of Calgary (or Hockey Calgary) requires the coaching staff of each team to be certified in a number of Coaching Programs. Depending on the mix and qualifications of a team's coaching staff, SVHA may require any coach to take a specific NCCP Coach program, which must be completed by the end of the current year (i.e. December 31, 2011). If the course is a requirement of SVHA, the the coach will be reimbursed for the cost of the course upon its successful completion.
SVHA may at any time require a coach to produce the card, a photocopy of same and/or the certification number supporting successful completion of any of the courses so marked on this application.
MANDATORY HELMETS FOR COACHES
Hockey Calgary passed a bylaw last season mandating that all coaches and on-ice personnel are required to wear CSA approved helmets when on the ice. A coach that fails to abide by this requirement will be subject to sanctions as defined by Hockey Calgary.
