Using Feedback to Promote Learning AND Reduce the Hassles of Grading

Sharper Feedback + Easier Grading = Better Teaching – Time and Agony. Evaluating student work is one of the most labor- and time-intensive teaching tasks, and when students focus all their attention on the grade instead of the feedback we have labored to provide, it can be one of the most frustrating. Now here’s the good news: there are strategies for giving feedback on student work that will prevent this vicious cycle from recurring (and save time!). In this workshop, co-facilitated by UAlbany faculty member and assessment expert Heidi Andrade, participants will explore research-based methods for clarifying expectations and providing feedback that makes sense to students. By the end of this session, participants will understand the basic elements of good assessment; learn the role of rubrics, checklists, and even traditional tests in assessment that promotes learning; and discover how students can be effectively engaged in assessment, under the right conditions.
