Throughout the years, residents and visitors to Laramie have recognized the unique characteristics of the "Tree Area", as it is commonly known. At the direction of the City Council, staff has started the process of creating design guidelines for the Tree Area Overlay District (see map). Protection of the neighborhood's character was deemed a priority of both the 2007 Comprehensive Plan and the 2010 Unified Development Code. As part of the City's new Unified Development Code the boundary of the Tree Area Overlay Zone was established and when standards would be required were established; no regulations or design guidelines were approved.
