OVERVIEW OF NEXT STEPS AMERICORPS

The Next Steps AmeriCorps Program is a new initiative that recognizes, trains, and supports students who are civically engaged. 100 selected students will pledge to complete 300 hours of service in one calendar year, and, in exchange for that commitment, will receive leadership training, support from the campus, PHENND and fellow members, and participate in ongoing supervision and reflection activities.

The bulk of the service work will be completed in the form of internships—each Next Steps member will be expected to serve in a community organization 10 hours per week and attend bi-weekly supervision/reflection sessions with the rest of the group. Next Steps members will also spend two hours per week mentoring two incoming first year students, coaching them through the transition from high school to college.

Next Steps AmeriCorps is an AmeriCorps program. Participating students will enroll as AmeriCorps members on a part-time basis. Students who enroll in this program and successfully complete the 300 hours of service, mentoring, and training, will receive an AmeriCorps Ed-Only Award of $1,212.44. Students who have Federal Work-Study as part of their financial aid package will also be eligible to use their work study award as a regular stipend during their AmeriCorps term of service.
