VOZ Mission Statement:
VOZ Workers Rights Education Project is a worker-led organization that empowers immigrants and day laborers to gain control over their working conditions through organizing, leadership development and community education
History:
In 1996, the Workers’ Organizing Committee formed in response to repressive tactics by immigration officials and local police that discouraged day laborers from seeking work on the corners of 2 major intersections in Portland, OR. Workers and community members subsequently founded VOZ Workers’ Rights Education Project in June 2000 to organize around day labor and immigrant rights in the Portland metropolitan area. VOZ saw its long-time vision of a Worker Center come to fruition on June 18, 2008, when the doors of the Martin Luther King Worker Center opened on 240 NE MLK Blvd. As part of a national coalition of day labor organizations, we are mobilizing our members not only to know their rights and protect themselves from exploitation, but also to make their voices heard, as an increasingly powerful constituency, on policy decisions for immigrant and worker justice.

Historia:
