The Vermont Fit and Healthy School Wellness Awards publicly recognize schools whose policies and practices reflect a high priority on healthy outcomes for children and schools that support a culture of health and wellness for employees.

All K-12 Vermont schools that receive federal child nutrition funding are eligible to apply.


AWARD CATEGORIES:
Elementary, Middle, and High School
Gold, Silver, Bronze

One school in each award category (Elementary, Middle and High School) will receive a cash award of:
  • Gold: $3,000.00
  • Silver: $2,000.00
  • Bronze: $1,000.00

NEW FOR 2012: $5,000.00 award for "most improved" from last year!

All applicants who complete this survey will receive a "Recognition Level" award - a Fit and Healthy School Wellness Award banner to display in your school.

TO APPLY:
1. Prepare by gathering your:

  • Coordinated School Health Team, which may include: school nurse, administrator, food service director, physical education teacher, Health or other teacher(s), custodial or school staff, school counselor, interested community members, parents, representative from local pediatrics or family practice office.
  • School wellness policies and implementation plan (if you have one).
  • Vermont Education Health Initiative (VEHI) School Health Champion/School Health Coordinator.
  • Copy of this application to discuss.

2. Complete this survey, which includes questions based on Vermont's 2008 Nutrition and Fitness Policy Guidelines and VEHI School Employee Wellness Assessment.

SCORING, unless otherwise noted, each:

  • "Yes" response = 5 points
  • "In Progress" response = 2 points
  • "No" response = 0 points

Guidance On Response Options:

"Yes" = the item is written in your school wellness policy and actively implemented/enforced.

"In Progress" = the item has been identified as a priority and the school is actively working on implementing, or the item is not in the written policy but is consistently implemented/enforced.

"No" = the item is not in the written policy and has not been identified as one to work on; OR the item is not applicable for your school.

Each essay will be reviewed by a team and scored on a scale of 0-10. Each essay asks about policy, systems, and environmental level strategies. These are actions that effect the entire school population. An environmental strategy refers to changing the physical environment to make healthy choices/behaviors easier, such as changing the placement of fruit in the cafeteria to be more prominent than chips or moving bike racks to a visble, prominent, safe, dry location.

Your school Principal must review the application and certify that the questions have been answered completely and accurately.

Applications must be completed by close of business, January 20, 2012.

Winners will be notified the week of February 20, 2012.
