TAG Funding Petition: The impending budget cuts at Boulder Valley School District represent a potentially large threat to Talented and Gifted funding, both at district and school levels. Per the Boulder Valley School District, budget cuts will be occurring in every department on a district level, and principals will have to decide individually on additional budget cuts at a school-based level.
Funding for the support of Talented and Gifted children is determined at a district level. However, many schools voluntarily contribute funding to supplement the nominal funding the district provides. The decision to continue giving supplemental funding is made at the school level by the principal, and in some cases the parent teacher organization. This means that funding for talented and gifted students will likely be impacted at both the district and the school level.
"Gifted" like other special needs groups, require school based adjustments to be supported by teachers, parents and administrators. The inherent intellectual, social and emotional differences of gifted children can mean that normal educational provisions are not applicable to this group.
This petition seeks to show support of TAG funding and gifted children, and urges the district and schools to consider the potentially huge impact it would have on this group if reductions to TAG programming occur simultaneously at both the district and school level.
