1. Introduction
Thank you for participating in the City of Port Orchard Shoreline Master Program survey. The City of Port Orchard is beginning the process of updating our Shoreline Master Program (SMP), and we are looking for input from citizens and organizations, such as yourself, that have an interest in what happens on the shorelines of Port Orchard.
The Shoreline Master Program was a requirement for all jurisdictions by the Washington State Shorelines Management Act of 1971. The City’s Shoreline Master Program was originally adopted in 1976 and was last updated in 1994. This document regulates development along the “shorelines of the State,” which includes Port Orchard’s Puget Sound shoreline, as well as Blackjack Creek from the mouth upstream to where it crosses under Highway 16.
To accomplish our required update to the Shoreline Master Program, City Staff will be working with the Planning Commission, the Department of Ecology, Tribes, property owners, community groups and interested citizens to develop the updated document. This process is expected to take approximately two years and conclude in 2011.
Your input is very important to this process and the results of this survey will be included as part of the information guiding the creation of the City of Port Orchard update to the Shoreline Master Program.
