"Over the past several years the incidence of a number of diseases has increased greatly. Asthma is perhaps the most important disease with an increasing incidence. But other diseases such as allergic reactions, bronchitis and respiratory infections also have been increasing. The cause of these increases may be due at least in part to the effects of air pollution"
-South Coast Air Quality Management District

Children are more vulnerable to these health effects than adults due mostly to their developing body. Children breathe 20%-50% more pollution than adults and spend 80% more time outdoors doing physical activities and therefore are more susceptible to the harmful effects of pollution even when they don't feel the symptoms of illnesses that adults would. A study conducted by University of California, Irvine reports children to have losses in lung functions even when they don't feel the discomfort.

People’s CORE's Community Action Research for Environmental Health Project (CARE Health Project) aims to improve the health in the community of Carson by reducing their exposure to environmental hazards and toxic chemicals.
