This course is designed for high school chemistry teachers in the Chicago area.
The purpose of this course to enhance PCK (pedagogical content knowledge) by examining how chemistry knowledge and teaching knowledge intertwine in the classroom to promote student learning. During the course, we will investigate the teaching and learning of several chemistry concepts from the National Science Education Standards by reading current educational research articles, engaging in and reflecting on classroom activities and experiments, and sharing successful strategies.
The class will meet from Mondays-Thursdays June 28th-July 22nd at Chicago State University in the Williams Science Center. After the conclusion of the summer class meetings, participants will conduct action research in their classrooms and report on their experiences at a follow-up workshop in the fall semester.
Teachers who successfully complete the course will receive 6 hrs of graduate credit and a stipend. Tuition for the course is funded by the Illinois Board of Higher Education, and thus the course if free for teachers.
