As we prepare to enter an election season and a new year, VDHA wants to make sure that we are spending our time and resources on issues that are relevant to licensed dental hygienists as well as serving the oral health needs of the citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia. This is your opportunity to let us know your thoughts.

Below are several issues that VDHA is currently examining in our pursuit to improve dental hygiene careers and access to care in Virginia. Please list in order of importance the issues which you feel hold the most potential to achieve these goals (with "1" being the most important). If you have two that are about the same degree of importance, you may give them the same rank.

The ability of RDHs to practice in a variety of practice settings such as nursing homes, public health clinics, community or tribal centers, head start programs, etc.
Permit Registered Dental Hygienists to seek Dental Assistant II credential without having to first become certified as Certified Dental Assistants.
Examine the potential for Direct Medicaid reimbursement for dental hygienists who wish to provide care for those insured by Medicaid.
Petition the state legislature to allow medical doctors and nurse practitioners to write prescriptions for dental hygienists to deliver care within their scope of practice.
