Pushing your students to think at a higher level is tough if you don’t have a way of finding out how they already think. Clickers allow you to do this, by asking students questions in real time within your classroom to find out some important things: What do they already know? What kinds of differentiations or connections are they already capable of making? What are their presuppositions? What can they do with a new piece of information? Knowing these things gives you the capacity to shape the work of the classroom based on reality rather than on hope.
The “clicker” is a small TV-remote-like handset that students purchase like a book and bring to class each day. They use this tool in class to respond to questions, practice problems and critical thinking challenges. The set-up is rather simple and at no cost to the instructor. This workshop includes an opportunity to practice for those who are contemplating the use of this maturing technology. Come see how clickers are being used here at UAlbany and in other institutions to improve student learning and join us for a discussion on best practices, benefits, challenges and technical issues related to the use of this tool. ITLAL staff members will be on hand afterward to help new adopters get set up for the coming semester.
