2013 OMA Annual Conference - Culture: Taking Charge
Hosted by the Markham Museum and the City of Markham
November 6-8, 2013

The OMA's Annual Conference brings together museum professionals, students, volunteers, supporters and stakeholders with diverse experiences and backgrounds from across Ontario. The Conference provides a comfortable learning environment for delegates to meet, share and exchange with each other.

Culture and museums are taking charge; change is constant and museums are adapting. They are agents of change and transformation in communities across the province and the world. Museums provide innovative spaces for knowledge creation; responding to both global and local challenges, and addressing issues of sustainability, social cohesion, and urbanization. They engage their communities and rise to the challenges of changing values, trends and economic drivers. Museums are place-makers, fostering open dialogue, where individuals of diverse backgrounds and unique experiences can meet and learn from each other.

We invite proposals that will reflect one of the three streams - Navigating Governance, Leading Change and Forging Our Path and that will explore some of the following questions:
• Are you an inclusive museum? How is your museum responsive, engaging, innovative and relevant?
• What is the role of museums and museum workers in the creative economy?
• How do we engage citizens and all levels of government as partners- now and in coming years?
• What are the changes needed related to governance to move us forward?
• How do we bridge policy and practice, in our museums and in our sector, to achieve the “future” that we need?
• How are museums preparing communities for the changing landscape?
• What is culture’s contribution to community building?
• What informs strategic foresight; how does risk taking and innovation build strong sustainable organizations?
• How does your museum (volunteers, staff, board, visitors, etc.) reflect your community?

As always, we welcome proposals for sessions that address all areas of museum work and that explore new and exciting aspects of the field, as well and the fundamental aspects of museum practice.

Individuals or organizations who would like to present at the Conference are invited to submit proposals and related materials by, Friday, June 7, 2013.
