SVQ IT Professional

Qualification consultation

The purpose of this short questionnaire is to get feedback on the proposed structure of vocational qualifications in the IT Professional area.

SQA is proposing to replace the current SVQs in IT Practitioner/Professional. The new qualifications will form the main component of a new Modern Apprenticeship in IT. The titles of the new qualifications are still to be decided.

Thank you for taking the time to complete this questionnaire.

Qualifications are proposed at levels 2 and 3 (SCQF levels 5 and 6). Level 4+ (SCQF 7+)may follow.

Level 2 (SCQF 5) will require 60 SCQF credit points
Level 3 (SCQF 6) will require 96 SCQF credit points
The structure of the new qualification at each level will be broadly similar as follows:
MANDATORY WORK-BASED UNITS
*Develop Own Effectiveness and Professionalism (at the level of the qualification)
*Health and Safety in ICT (SCQF 4)
OPTIONAL UNITS drawn from:
Minimum 11 credits at SCQF 5 (20 at SCQF 6) WORK-BASED UNITS
Maximum 10 credits at SCQF 5 (12 at SCQF 6) from ITQ UNITS
Maximum one third of the overall credits from UNITS BASED ON VENDOR CERTIFICATION EXAMS which have been SCQF credit rated (20 credits at level 2; 32 credits at level 3)

Units of differing levels can be combined within a qualification provided at least two thirds of the credits are at or above the qualification level. Where a family of units exists at more than one level (eg Systems Architecture) only one of the Units can contribute to a qualification.

1. Do you agree that the overall size of each award is appropriate?

 YesNo
Level 2 (SCQF 5) - 60 SCQF credit points
Level 3 (SCQF 6) - 96 SCQF credit points

2. A level 4 (SCQF 7) award would require 200 SCQF credit points. Do you see a demand for a vocational qualification of this size at level 4 (SCQF 7)?

3. A limited list of vendor units has already been credit-rated for SCQF and will be included in the option list. The list will be updated periodically by SQA to reflect the rapidly changing nature of units in this category. When a particular certification expires and is no longer available from the vendor, the corresponding unit will be removed from the option list.

The contribution of vendor qualifications is capped at 33% of the overall award. Do you agree with this proportion?

 YesNo
Level 2 (SCQF 5)
Level 3 (SCQF 6)

4. There is a requirement to complete a minimum proportion of 33% work-based optional units in each award (including the two mandatory Units). Do you agree with the proposed proportions?

 YesNo
Level 2 (SCQF 5)
Level 3 (SCQF 6)

5. Candidates can choose to include units from the IT User (ITQ) frameworks if they wish, up to a maximum of 10 credits at level 2 or 12 credits at level 3. Typically this equates to two application software units from the ITQ framework, however there is no restriction on the number or level of units that may be included.

Do you agree with the stated maximum allowances at each level?

 YesNo
Level 2 (SCQF 5)
Level 3 (SCQF 6)

6. The qualifications can have a single generic title (eg IT Professional) or multiple titles to reflect the optional units selected (eg IT Professional: Web Developer).

Which one of the qualification titling options do you support?
