The 2008 NYC Building Code requires major changes on inspections during the construction process.

Under the old 1968 NYC Building Code, Professional Engineers and Registered Architects were the only people authorized to conduct the required inspections during construction. These inspections performed at critical junctures and on critical structural components of a structure were called “controlled inspections” and ensured that the work was safe and being constructed according to approved plans using the specified materials.

Under the new code, controlled inspections have been replaced by “Special Inspections” and mandates very specific standards for a proper inspections and qualifications for the new “special inspector” and certification requirements of “Special Inspection Agencies.”
This presentation will review the pertinent provisions of the new Building Code as it relates to Special Inspections and Materials Testing and the role of the Special Inspector and Special Inspection Agencies. This material is especially pertinent now as the new rules have phased in and the deadline for accreditation approaches."
