A core group of Ashford businesses have renewed efforts to bring the Ashford Business Owners Association (ABOA) back to life. A major weakness of this organization has been lack of continued involvement from its members. Below is a list of action points. Considering this list as defining the values of the organization, please complete the survey below.

ACTION POINTS for ABOA

• Provide an economical method of advertising for small business, using the Association as a force for group advertising. Creating a form of “mini” websites within the ABOA website for a reasonable cost.

• Affiliating the ABOA with other business groups, such as, the Windham Chamber, and sharing in some of the support features and benefits provided by those organizations.

• Speaking with a common voice on both local and State issues, like signage, pedestrian crossings, and traffic issues. Having sufficient funds to support legal advice for the organization.

• Using the volume of member businesses to negotiate group medical, disability, and/or business insurance plans for small businesses.

• Expanding the ABOA website to provide more valued and timely information for members.

• Committing to do business with members and recommending association businesses. Networking on common business problems. Collaborating to bundle services for marketing purposes.

• Creating information features by acting as a conduit for organizations offering assistance to small businesses both within the areas universities, federal government and state.

• Promoting business locally by sponsorships with kids and charities. Participating in and supporting business fairs and public business displays.

• Expanding and making AEDC current “Buy Local” campaign more aggressive.

1. There are over two hundred small businesses in Ashford. Do you agree they should have a local advocate?

2. • For The Ashford Business Owners Association to exist, it needs support to be effective. Would you be willing to become a member, provide support and ideas, and meet with other Ashford businesses at least four times per year?

3. • A strong Association must provide value to its members. Based on the list above, do you see value to your business in the points described?

4. Do you perceive enough value to yourself and your business to become an active member of the Association, beginning with a meeting on February 9, 2012 to nominate and elect Association officers and set priorities for the year’s activities?
