2012 Legislative Briefing & Advocacy Day Registration
On January 25, 2012, advocates across Virginia will come together with one unified voice on behalf of victims and survivors of sexual and domestic violence!
While the Governor's proposed budget protects funding for sexual and domestic violence victim services, it is critical that we continue to urge our legislators to prioritize state funding for sexual and domestic violence services.
The Action Alliance will also be introducing legislation to create a special license plate in Virginia bearing the legend, “Peace Begins at Home”. Proceeds from the license plate will be put into a “Building Healthy Futures Fund” and used for primary prevention of sexual and domestic violence (working with children and youth in communities across the state to teach healthy relationships) in Virginia.
We are also expecting several bills to come out of the Governor’s Office from the work of the Domestic Violence Advisory Board and the Crime Commission that deal with domestic and sexual violence that we will be actively involved with and following throughout the session. These include, but are not limited to, addressing the act of strangulation in the Code of Virginia; the issuance and extension of Protective Orders issued by the Circuit Court; and improving the investigation and prosecution of campus sexual assault.
There will also be a lot of new legislators in the General Assembly this year and it’s important that we get them involved and working with us on these important issues.
We are excited that you have decided to join us.
