Borough Of Fox Chapel Garbage Collection Survey
Later this year, the existing garbage and recycling contract will expire. At the direction of Borough Council, the Borough Manager will seek competitive bids for a new collection contract to reduce the costs associated with this service. Currently, the Borough's monthly rate for garbage service is $38.31/household which is 3 times more expensive than other local municipalities. (The amount of your tax dollars that pays for garbage service varies by the total amount of taxes paid to the Borough.) Over the current 5-year garbage contract, the price for garbage collection has risen from $395,487 in 2005 to $912,925 in 2010 and is expected to continue to rise. Currently, approximately 1 mill of the total real estate tax millage of 2.3 mills is garbage related.
The Borough has engaged a consultant experienced in the solid waste industry to find ways to reduce these costs. The requirement of back door collection service for all homes is a major contributing factor to these higher-than-normal increases.
