1. Intro

The Sego Lily Center for the Abused Deaf (SLCAD) in Salt Lake City, Utah. SLCAD staff is very excited to be hosting the next Justice for Deaf Victims National Coalition (JDVNC) Conference October 19 – 23, 2010 in Salt Lake City, Utah. because of the beauty that nature and the mountains offer us, the Utah Travel Council has dubbed our state as a place where life can be experienced in a whole other level, ”Life Elevated”. With that thought, we have themed this conference, “Accessibility Elevated”. SLCAD and JDVNC want to bring the idea that all of our services can go beyond the very basics-Providing effective services to the empowerment of Deaf victims/survivors gaining a whole new life of freedom! This rare national conference will bring together professionals who specifically serve Deaf, Deaf-Blind and hard of hearing (Deaf) victims and survivors of abuse. If you are a professional fluent in American Sign Language (ASL) and work in field of domestic violence and sexual assault: advocacy, mental health counseling, case management, volunteer, Board member, etc. you won’t want to miss this opportunity! The conference will collectively explore best practices for providing accessible and effective service delivery to one of the most under-served populations in our country. Deaf people including victims/survivors are often excluded from important information and services due to their communication and cultural needs. The JDVNC conference workshops will involve: working with collaborative partners to create the most accessible services, developing advocacy and in-service trainings and workshops, sharing tips on educating the Deaf community about abuse and where to get help, and more!
