1. are a male aged 18 or over
2. are a currently-enrolled undergraduate student
3. have lost a loved one to death during the past 12 months.

The collegiate male's experience of a death of a loved one: The grief processes of athletes vs. non-athletes

RESEARCHER

PURPOSE
This study compares the experience of male collegiate athletes and non-athletes after the death of a family member or close friend by assessing dimensions of bereavement and interpersonal guilt.

PROCEDURE
If you agree to participate in this study, you will be asked to fill out a brief demographic questionnaire. You will then be asked to fill out two survey forms, inquiring about your experiences with grief and interpersonal guilt. The entire process is expected to take approximately 30-45 minutes.

COMPENSATION
There is no financial or other compensation for your participation in this study. Your participation in this research is on a free and voluntary basis and is greatly appreciated.

WITHDRAWAL FROM THIS STUDY
You may withdraw from this study at any time prior to the completion of the study. You do not have to provide any explanation for your decision to withdraw. To withdraw, simply close the browser window without completing the survey. If you choose to withdraw, all information gathered from you as part of the study will be destroyed.

CONFIDENTIALITY
Your participation in this study will be kept strictly confidential. All completed surveys will be kept by the researcher in a secure electronic account with a private password to ensure protection of the data. No information from which you could be identified will appear in the final study. The only circumstance in which confidentiality may be breached is if a disclosure is made regarding the imminent danger to someone, or abuse of a minor, elder, or dependent adult; it may be required to make mandated reports of such disclosures under California state law.

RISKS
As this is a topic of a sensitive nature, minor discomfort or distress may result from participation in this study. If you find that you have been distressed by your participation in this study, the researcher can provide you a list of low-fee psychotherapy providers in your area.
