STEPSHOW RULES AND REGULATIONS
  • The application fee is $100 and is non-refundable.  Cash, money orders and/or cashier’s check are only acceptable form of payment.  Payment should be made payable to Student Life at Governors State University. 
  • Step teams will be chosen to participate on a first-come, first-serve basis.  If your step team is not selected to step, your application fee will be returned to you.
  • The prize for the best fraternity performance and best sorority performance will be $1000.
  • Each step team must consist of a minimum of 3 (three) performers and maximum of 10 (ten) performers.
  • All team captains must attend mandatory planning meeting, teams will be permitted to call/skype into the meeting. 
  • The only persons who will be allowed to enter the stepshow for FREE are the persons who are listed on the application and are performing as part of the step team.  Each step team will be allowed to have two stagehands and who will get in FREE as well. All participants will be given wrist bands that must stay on at all times.  Only persons with the regulated wrist bands will be allowed backstage and in dressing rooms. 
  • You are not allowed to communicate with any of the judges prior to or during the stepshow.  This will result in the immediate removal of the judge and disqualification of your step team.
  • Any step team not complying with the rules and regulations aforementioned will receive a deduction in your scores and/or disqualification.
  • Each team should provide 1 sound technician to ensure the proper timing of the music in the show.  This will be the only person allowed in the sound area with the professional production staff.
  • All pre-recorded music must be given to the technician during the scheduled rehearsal and prior to show time. Music is preferred on CD. 
  • The order of the show will be determined by Governors State University Student Life prior to the date of the show. 
  • No food or beverage can be used in the show or brought onto the stage for the performance. 
  • No references to drug use or excessive violence will be tolerated. 
  • Water, Oils, Fire and/or pyrotechnics will not be allowed. 
  • All props and scenery must be free-standing, and may not lean up against the stage curtains, screens or walls.  Excessive decorations are also not permitted.  These decorations include, but are not limited to: glitter, feathers, confetti, etc.
  • The auditorium and backstage areas must be cleared immediately following the show.  This includes all props, costumes, and show materials.
SCORING
  • Judges will score each performance according to the criteria below.  The highest and lowest cores will be removed, and the remaining seven scores will be averaged.
  • No profanity or obscene language is to be used during the stepshow.  It will result in a 10-point deduction from each judge for every occurrence
  • All teams must be in attendance at designated call time prior to the beginning of the show.  Failure to check-in will result in a 5-point deduction from each judge.
  • Each step team will be given 10 minutes for their performance, which includes intro and exit.  If your step team exceeds the time allotted, it will result in a 10-point deduction from each judge.
  • The scoring scale shall range from 1 to 5.  A score of “1” will be considered “poor” and a score of “5” will be considered “exceptional”.  The scoring categories shall consist of the following:
a)     Appearance: This category rates each team on their set design, costume originality, and overall stage presence. 

b)    Precision/Coordination: This category scores each team on the synchronization of the steps as well as how precise they execute each step.

c)     Difficulty: Each team should display a level of complexity in their steps that shows a high level of skill.

d)    Creativity/Originality: The theme of each show should be fully developed, and all aspects of the show should be related to the theme. 

e)     Audience Response: Please rate each team on how the audience responds to their show.

f)       Professionalism: It is expected that each team maintains good sportsmanship, respect, and decorum in relationship to the other teams. This includes no excessive insulting of other Greek organizations, profanity, and crude sexual acts.
BINDING AGREEMENT

By submitting below I am agreeing, as my team’s representative, to all of the above guidelines, expectations, and rules involved in participating in the Governors State University Stepshow on Friday, April 29, 2016 in the Center for Performing Arts.  I also agree that I am the authorized person to submit the application on behalf of the team, and I will make sure that each team member will adhere to all rules set forth in this contract.  It is my understanding that failure to comply with the aforementioned can result in disqualification from the show, point deduction, or forfeit of the participation and/or prize money as to be determined by Governors State University.  By submitting your applications, you consent to be photographed, filmed and/or otherwise recorded. 

Also your participation in the Stepshow constitutes your consent to such photography, filming, and/or recording and to any use, in any and all media throughout the universe in perpetuity, of your appearance, voice and name for any purpose whatsoever in connection with the production being produced by Governors State University. You understand that all photography, filming and/or recording will be done in reliance on this consent given by you by your participation.
