In January 1884, the city adopted a Historic City Seal to represent Roanoke. The Seal depicts Roanoke as a city in the mountains, and shows a passenger train heading west -- a symbol of the desire to explore new horizons and look toward the future. The Seal also reflects the confluence of the natural and man-made environment that formed the city in which we live.

In 1906, the City Council made the decision to adopt a new City Seal which is in use today. That image shows Lady Justice seated in the forefront, on guard with a pair of scales in one hand and a sword in the other hand, a cog wheel and sledgehammer at her foot; in the background are the smoke stacks of business and industry, and a railway engine pulling a train loaded with cargo; city buildings frame the horizon.

Much about Roanoke has changed since 1906, and City Manager Chris Morrill is now asking City Council to consider changing the image used to represent the city from the 1906 City Seal, back to the Historic 1884 City Seal as a way to communicate a more timeless concept of our city. As part of the process to evaluate this decision, citizen input is invited.
