Cabrillo Sustainability Pledge, 2012

1. GreenSteps: Honoring Earth Day - My Commitment to Help Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions

I pledge to take the following "GreenSteps" to lower my carbon footprint at Cabrillo, to help lessen greenhouse gas emissions as well as financial impact to Cabrillo, amidst staff and faculty layoffs, and class and program cuts.

* 1. Energy: Top ways to reduce emissions

Our energy use is a huge budget drain & major contributor to climate change. Mark all the GreenSteps you pledge to take:

[Mythbuster: Modern equipment is NOT harmed by being turned on and off frequently. The surge of energy is very small relative to leaving them on for extended periods.]

I'll turn off lights when not needed and when I'm the last to leave

I'll turn my monitor off when not needed for more than 20 minutes.

I'll turn my computer off when not needed for more than 2 hours and always overnight/weekends.

I'll turn off the printer, scanner and copier when not needed, always nights and weekends.

I'll locate power strips/surge protectors in my office, will plug all equipment into them, and turn strips off when equipment's not needed (always nights and weekends).

To help change ingrained habits, I'll place GreenSteps reminder logos [to be provided] on computers and equipment in my office/classrooms/building.

I'll buy Energy Star-qualified office products and equipment - which use half the electricity of standard equipment.

I'll enter a work order at http://mno/default.htm when rooms are too hot or cold (vs. using space heaters or leaving doors open to compensate).

I'll use compact fluorescent light bulbs.

I'll use alternatives - at least occasionally - to being an S.O.V. (single occupancy vehicle).

I'll use a reusable mug, dishes and water bottle.

I'll buy and use recycled paper.

I'll print all copies/print jobs double-sided.

I'll recycle everything that's recyclable. [For more bins I'll enter a work order at http://mno/default.htm]

I will start a box of paper, printed on one side, to use for printing drafts.

I won't leave the tap running.

I will report water leaks and other resource waste to http://mno/default.htm. I'll use no more paper than I need (paper towels, toilet tissue, etc.).

I'll choose local, organic, non-toxic whenever possible. [Note, Cabrillo Cafeteria innovations include local organic produce (incl. Hort.-provided!), vegan and veggie options, compostible utensils, and much more.]
