Introduction
The following questionnaire forms part of my research exploring the attitudes of young adults to community asset ownership in Scottish rural communities. This work is being undertaken as a contribution to my honours thesis in Sustainable Environmental Management.
The Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003 introduced the ‘community right to buy’, granting communities pre-emption rights on the sale of land in Scotland. There are now some 500,000 acres of land in rural Scotland under community ownership.
An essential part of any proposal for a community buy-out is that it supports sustainable development and therefore success will be judged over the long-term. Sustainability implies inter-generational support and the purpose of this study is to explore the attitudes and aspirations of young adults to community asset ownership in rural communities. The aim of the research is to identify gaps in knowledge and understanding of the issues and to suggest potential areas for further research.
Participation by young adults in the development process is viewed as key to gaining their commitment and therefore I would be grateful for your participation. On completion of my thesis I aim to produce a summary of my research findings that will be published through SRUC's Rural Policy Centre.
