1. Hello!

We want to tell you about a research study we are doing. A research study is a way to learn information about something. We would like to find out more about how children in a military family feel about their life and education in Hawaii. You are being asked to join the study because you are a child aged between 10-18 years old, attend school in Hawaii, and have a parent(s) who is/are in the military based in Hawaii.

If you agree to join this study, you will be directed to the survey page on this website and asked to tell us a little about how you liked the survey and whether there were any questions that did not make sense to you. This is called a “pilot test” of the survey and your answers will help us to improve the survey so that we can use it among more military children just like yourself.

There are a few possible risks to taking part in this pilot test. Some of the questions may be uncomfortable for you to answer, such as those that ask about whether you have a parent who has been deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan.

However, you do not have to answer any questions that make you feel bad or uncomfortable. We are not going to be keeping any of the information you share with us on this survey. Instead, taking this survey is only meant to help improve the survey for future use.

We do not know if you will be helped by being in this study. We may learn something that will help other military children who are living and going to school in Hawaii some day.

You do not have to join this study. It is up to you. You can say okay now, and you can change your mind later. All you have to do is tell us. No one will be mad at you if you change your mind.
