Communication Processes Between the CRNA and the SICU Nurse

1. Section 1: Informed Consent

Dear Study Participant:

You are invited to participate in a research study titled “An Exploratory Study of Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) Nurses’ Perceptions Regarding Communication of Information Received From Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) During Patient Transfer.”

This study is being conducted by Lauren Baker, RN, BSN, SRNA, Tamara Durniak, RN, BSN, SRNA, and Heyni Solera, RN, BSN, SRNA, who are currently attending Georgetown University’s nurse anesthesia program. The purpose of this study is to investigate if surgical intensive care nurses perceive the communication received from a CRNA at time of patient transfer as a comprehensive source of information in relation to patient care and to begin to evaluate potential barriers that may affect the perception of this communication process. This study also fulfills the graduation requirements dictated by Georgetown’s nurse anesthesia program.

In this study, you will be asked to complete an online survey regarding your interaction with the CRNA during patient transfer. You will be asked questions regarding your opinion about the thoroughness and effectiveness of this communication process. Participation in this study is voluntary.

We anticipate that this survey should take 1-5 minutes to complete. Once you submit your completed survey, there will be no way to withdraw from the study because the survey contains no identifying information.

All responses to this survey are strictly anonymous. Please do not include your name on any of the materials you send back to us. Returned surveys and analyzed data will be kept in a password protected computer file. Access to the surveys and the coded data will be protected and accessed only by the researchers.

There are no risks associated with participating in this study. While you will not experience any direct benefits from participation, information collected in this study may benefit others in the future by helping to improve any weaknesses that may be found in the interaction with SICU nurses and CRNAs.

If you have any questions regarding the survey or this research project in general, please contact the primary investigator, Lauren Baker, at 978-870-4315 or via email at teamairway@gmail.com or our faculty advisor, Dr. Donna M. Jasinski at 202-687-4612 or via email at jasinskd@georgetown.edu .

By completing and submitting this survey, you are indicating your consent to participate in the study.
