First Responders Disability Awareness Training
1. First Responder Questionaire
Niagara University has been awarded a grant from the NYS Developmental Disabilities Planning Council to address the need for training and awareness on the part of First Responders, who are defined as Fire Fighters, Emergency Medical Services, and Law Enforcement. We would like to hear from First Responders in regards to the challenges and issues you face in situations (emergency and non-emergency) that may involve individuals with disabilities.
Disabilities as defined include sensory (hearing loss/deaf, vision loss/blind), physical (individual with ambulation issues to include those who use wheelchairs), intellectual/cognitive (formally mental retardation), autism, mental illness, and other disabilities such as Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and learning disabilities. These are the disabilities you are most likely to encounter. However, please be aware that there are other disabilities you may come across, and we want your input on those as well.
We are working with several law enforcement, fire, and EMS associations and departments, who are already providing direction on the curriculum development for this project. Their support is vital to our long range outcome. They have also acknowledged the importance of hearing from you, the First Responder.
Please answer the following questions to the best of your ability.
Thank you for your input and if you have any questions, feel free to contact me. I welcome your calls and emails.
