CONSENT TO PARTICPATE IN A RESEARCH PROJECT

Site where study is to be conducted: This study will be conducted online at the Surveymonkey site.
Introduction/Purpose: You are invited to participate in a research study. The study is conducted under the direction of Dr William Ashton. The purpose of this research study is to examine the sense of community within different fandoms (fan subcultures). The results of this study may increase our understanding of the psychological consequences of fandoms.
Procedures: Approximately 500 individuals are expected to participate in this study. Each subject will participate in an online questionnaire. The time commitment of each participant is expected to be 15 minutes. Each session will take place online at the Surveymonkey site.
Possible Discomforts and Risks: Your participation in this study may cause you to reflect upon the sense of community in your fandom. No physical discomforts are expected to occur.
Benefits: There are no direct benefits.
Voluntary Participation: Your participation in this study is voluntary, and you may decide not to participate without prejudice, penalty, or loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled. If you decide to leave the study, please contact the principal investigator Dr Ashton to inform him of your decision.
Confidentiality: The data obtained from you will be collected via online survey. The collected data will be accessible to Dr Ashton. The researcher will protect your confidentiality by not requiring identifying information in the survey and by not collecting IP addresses. The collected data will be stored in an encrypted datafile in the locked research laboratory of Dr Ashton.
