What's wrong with being a local councillor?

Fewer than a third of local councillors are women, and it can be difficult to find people who want to stand for election.

Most of us don’t have much interest in politics, or know much about who runs our local Government or Health Service, but us mums do tend to volunteer for all sorts of things, so why don’t more of us take that step up? Many of us don’t have the time even to volunteer, but if you are working, it’s even possible to get paid time off if you’re a councillor. What holds us back? What’s your experience?

This is a very short survey, and we’d love your thoughts, so please do have a go!

The information will be really useful for the politicians who are scratching their heads over this.

There’s no prize to be won but if you’d like to see a Westminster select committee in action, there will be invitations for a few Netmums members to join the forum debate. If you’d like to put your name forward, please add your email address at the end (You will need to pay for your own travel to Westminster) All the survey responses will remain anonymous. Thank you for helping.

5. Do you have an interest in the decisions your local council makes?

9. Do you know anything about your local councillors? (Tick those that apply)
10. Please tell us more about your thoughts and experiences. If you've been involved with a local council, did you enjoy the experience and what do you see as the barriers? If you are not interested, tell us more about why.
11. If you would like to spend a couple of hours in Westminster this autumn, participating in an event where you can debate these issues in detail, do leave your email address here.
12. Would you be happy to act as a case study and talk to the media about this issue? If you wouldn't mind us passing your details onto a member of the press then please leave your name, phone number and email below.
