A free-standing birth center would be a birth center staffed by midwives (either CPMs or CNMs) and would not be affiliated with a hospital. Free-standing birth centers staffed by midwives have been shown to be a safe option for low-risk women. Free-standing birth centers support natural, vaginal births. Often birth centers offer waterbirth and may also support VBAC (vaginal birth after c-section).
Free-standing birth centers are a very affordable option for women with little or no insurance coverage for pregnancy. Usually a birth center costs approximately 1/3 of the cost of a hospital birth. For those who have health insurance, services provided by a midwife are often covered at either in-network or out-of-network rate.
