Thank you for your interest in commenting on the Columbus & Bartholomew County Zoning Ordinance. The current Zoning Ordinance was adopted by the Columbus City Council and Bartholomew County Commissioners in 2008. It has undergone significant, planned maintenance revisions in 2009 and 2011. The Zoning Ordinance is to continue to be updated regularly and any feedback you can provide will be an important part of future revisions. Particular emphasis is placed on making certain that the Zoning Ordinance is fair, able to be applied consistently, free of unintended consequences, and appropriate for the community.
The Planning Department staff is charged with administering and enforcing the Zoning Ordinance. The staff also collects public feedback, monitors changes in state and federal law, and documents any needed clarifications. The staff reports these items to the Columbus and Bartholomew County Plan Commissions and elected officials. These officials decide if the Zoning Ordinance is to be revised.
