AMDA 2012: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Elders in Long Term Care
1. Introduction
Dear AMDA Colleagues...
Cultural competence is a fundamental and essential component of all patient care. While ethnic, gender and socioeconomic factors have traditionally been a focus, lifestyle and sexual preference must also be considered, yet are often overlooked. This is particularly true for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) elders, rendering them essentially invisible in the long term care setting.
In developing baseline research, we've designed a brief survey regarding issues pertinent to the care of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) elders in the LTC setting. As there is scant research and little empirical data to guide providers, your input would be very helpful and greatly appreciated in framing a discussion and possible future presentation to meet AMDA member needs. Participation is voluntary, all responses will remain confidential, and completion of the survey should take less than five minutes.
Our thanks in advance for your time and assistance.
Best regards,
Pat Latham Bach, PsyD, RN
Dan Bluestein, MD, CMD, AGSF
