Primary Care Survey

1. Survey questions

Alcohol Concern Cymru, the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) and the British Medical Association (BMA) are conducting this survey to gauge the views of people working in primary care on current alcohol policy issues in Wales.

Alcohol Concern Cymru, RCN and the BMA believe that alcohol in moderation can be enjoyable for many people in Wales, but also recognise that regularly drinking above guidelines can cause harm to individuals and society as a whole.

45% of adults in Wales admit to drinking more than the recommended daily amount on at least one day in the past week, including 28% regularly binge drinking (drinking more than double the recommended daily amount over a short period). Alcohol now accounts for over 1,000 deaths in Wales each year.

We would be grateful if you please complete the short 7-question survey below. Thank you.

1. Please tell us what field of work you are in. Are you a:

*
2. Do you believe that price promotions which incentivise excessive drinking in the on-trade (pubs/bars/clubs), such as 'two-for-one' and '£1 a shot' offers, should be banned?

*
3. The aim of minimum pricing is to ensure retailers are unable to sell alcohol below a baseline cost. A 50p per unit minimum price, for example, would mean that a bottle of wine containing nine units of alcohol could not be sold for less than £4.50. In order to stop deep-discounting in the off-trade (supermarkets, off-licences, shops) do you think there should be a minimum price per unit for alcohol?

*
4. Should prominent information on the total units per drink and the health consequences of alcohol misuse always be provided wherever alcohol is sold?

*
5. To what extent do you agree or disagree with the following statement: 'Alcohol should be a public health issue in Wales with the same status as tobacco and obesity.'

6. Which of the following alcohol-specific training have you recieved since January 2009?

7. Do you have any comments on what would help you to deliver a better service to patients needing help with their drinking?
