Dear Educators,

Today, French is the second foreign language most studied in Californian schools. For this reason, the Cultural services of the French Embassy in the US, in partnership with the California Foreign Language Project, The American Association of Teachers of French and the Francophone Research and Resource Center at the University of Southern California have combined forces in order to provide the support necessary to ensure that the study of the French language not only maintains this position as an option for students of World Language in California, but also also grows in popularity in the future.

These organizations are interested in having your perspectives on the status of French language education in California as well as how we can best serve you as advocates for its continued growth and development. The primary goal of the following survey is to conduct a needs assessment of the current situation in K-12 schools, as well as in colleges and universities throughout the state. We would like to collect your ideas concerning what support mechanisms could be created as well as how we can best collaborate to encourage and nurture interest in French language and culture study in the educational, political, economic and social arenas. We will carefully consider your input and employ the results of your responses to design and sponsor curriculum and professional development programs designed to address the identified needs of educators and thus advance, promote, and support the goals of Francophone studies in California.

Please respond to the following questions regarding your perspectives on the status of French Education in California. We very much appreciate your taking the time to help all of us in this endeavor and provide us with the critical feedback that we need to develop a strategic plan to guide and support the teaching and learning of French language and culture in California.
