Title: Retention and MOOC’s (Massively Open Online Course)

Investigator(s): Jason Stone, M.A., Oklahoma State University; Advisor: Kerri Kearney, Ed.D., Oklahoma State University.

Purpose: The purpose of the research study is to develop a better understanding of what motivates students to persist or not persist in coursework in a MOOC’s. You must be 18 years or older to participate.

What to Expect: “This research study is administered online. Participation in this research will involve completion of one questionnaire. The survey should take no longer than 20 minutes to complete - in most cases, much less. The questionnaire will ask about your experiences in a MOOC. You must complete each question before moving on to the next. You will be expected to complete the questionnaire once. The survey should take participants about 5-10 minutes to complete. A small number of participants will be contacted and asked to participate in a webcam based interview. The webcam interview should take no longer than 45 minutes. The webcam interview will be audio recorded. The interview will take place at a webcam of your choosing at a mutually convenient time.

Risks: There are no risks associated with this project which are expected to be greater than those ordinarily encountered in daily life.

Benefits: You may gain an appreciation and understanding of how research is conducted. You may contribute to society’s knowledge about MOOCs.

Compensation: Participants in the survey will be eligible for a prize drawing. One ipod shuffle will be given away to one randomly selected participant.

Your Rights and Confidentiality: Your participation in this research is voluntary. There is no penalty for refusal to participate, and you are free to withdraw your consent and participation in this project at any time, without penalty.

Confidentiality: All information about you will be kept confidential and will not be released. Research records will be stored securely and only researchers and individuals responsible for research oversight will have access to the records. Individual’s names will not be collected only email addresses. Pseudonyms will be used to reference individual participants. The data will be kept in my private office located in the Learning Resources Center room 340 at the OSU-OKC campus. This data will be destroyed after analysis no later than 9/1/2013.
