Defining Social Media in an International Recruitment Context
University admissions have embraced social media tools to complement their international outreach strategies and Internet recruiting activities. This survey aims to gather general information about social media habits and Internet recruiting methods used by international admissions departments. This survey is open to all international admissions staff, even if you have just started using social media for international outreach and recruiting or if you use social media in conjunction with domestic recruiting/admissions activities.
Social Media and Social Networking are often used interchangeably. For purposes of this survey, here are some clear definitions:
Social Media in this survey is a referred to as the social communication tools used for sharing and discussing information. Social media allow users to interact, share and converse with one another online: blogs, forums, social networks, online chat, wikis, newsfeeds, youtube videos, etc. A social media outreach strategy is outreach using these tools.
Social Networking is the use of communities to engage with others: Facebook, Myspace, LinkedIn, Twitter, Ning. Social networking sites often include social media tools to facilitate the interaction and conversation.
Internet recruiting: Implementing outreach and recruiting activities online; also known as online recruiting, e-recruiting.
