As part of our School Improvement process, we are asking our support staff to take a few minutes to complete this survey. We would very much appreciate your input as we develop our School Improvement Plan and seek to make DeLand High School an even better place to learn.

Describe the general conditions of the physical plant and up-keep of the school The condition of the physical plant is very poor. There is poor light, poor heating, unsafe class areas and/or playground, peeling paint, etc.

The school is generally not safe and clean. Some repairs are needed throughout the building.

The school is generally safe and clean. The physical plant does not interfere with the school program.

The school building is clean, orderly, and well taken care of by staff and students.

Describe the instructional leadership in this school. There is no centralized leadership for instruction. Teachers deal with instructional matters independently.

Occasionally, various people provide limited leadership. There is not an identifiable or consistent leader.

Instructional leadership is limited and is not a key factor in the school. The principal is generally the instructional leader.

The principal provides a degree of instructional leadership through coordination and delegation. The principal is the instructional leader.

There is very clear, strong, centralized instructional leadership from the principal. Teachers turn to the principal with instructional concerns.

Is there a written vision/mission statement for this school that guides the instructional program? There is no agreed-upon written statement of purpose.

A written statement exists, but it has little influence on the instructional program.

A statement does exist. A few general instructional decisions are guided by this statement.

The primary communication is through the report card sent home each marking period. There is little direct communication.

Communication is primarily at scheduled conferences, meetings, and through occasional notes sent home. When

necessary, communication increases.

There is formal and informal communication. Conferences and phone calls for specific reasons are initiated by teachers and parents.

Multiple communications are used by parents and teachers (e.g. home visits, class newsletters, phone calls, school visits, regular notes, etc.)

In general, how would you describe the level of expectations teachers in your school have regarding student achievement? Expectation are generally low throughout the school.

Expectations are “realistic” based on student characteristics. Low expectations for some students are implied.

Some teachers have high expectations. Many have moderate expectations.

High expectation on the part of most teachers but moderate or low on the part of some teachers.

High expectations on the part of nearly all teachers for nearly all students.

9. Do parents feel welcome and involved in this school?

Do parents feel welcome and involved in this school? Few parents are involved in the school.

Some parents serve as school volunteers, and room mothers or fathers are available when called upon by the teacher to drive for field trips or provide refreshments for class parties.

There is an active parent organization in the school which raises money for school programs, and there is an active volunteer coordinator; parents serve on the school advisory committee.

There is an active parent organization in the school. Parents are encouraged to volunteer in school, serve on advisory committees and participate in other school level advisory committees and are invited to participate in decision-making opportunities.

Parents participate actively in school decision-making; help determine the school’s mission, goals, and budget; and help analyze the school’s needs and determine ways to build upon strengths. Parents serve as volunteers and work with school personnel to improve the school.
