Councillors involved in planning have an important role to play in guiding and shaping development. Their role is challenging, as they need to balance the needs of the local community with a need to ensure that development remains deliverable and viable. This means councillors must have both an understanding of the local community’s needs and aspirations, and an understanding of the economics of development.
But there is concern that both councillors and the planners who advise them receive inadequate training in the economics of development. A group of organisations, including representatives of the property industry, town planners and local government, together with Government agencies and the Department for Communities and Local Government, has therefore commissioned Roger Tym & Partners to examine what kind of training might be required.
This survey is a key part of the study, and will help us understand the type and amount of training needed by councilors involved in planning decisions and planning policy-making.
