Psychological causes of stalking.
1. Information about the survey
You are being invited to take part in a research study investigating the psychological causes of stalking. To take part in this study you are required to complete a four part survey. Before deciding whether you wish to participate it is important for you to understand why the study is being conducted and what it will involve. Please take time to read the following information carefully and then decide whether or not you wish to take part.
I am conducting a study into the underlying psychological reasons for stalking behaviours. Conducting a study is a necessary requirement of my Masters Degree in Forensic Psychology and by carrying it out in this area my hope is to gain a better understanding of the reasons why some people engage in stalking. You will not benefit directly from participating in this study, however your participation will help to investigate this significant social problem. If you decide to take part your confidentiality and anonymity are assured, you may still omit any information you do not wish to give and also to withdraw at any time without giving a reason
What will you be asked to do?
You will be asked to complete a 4 part questionnaire which asks questions relating to your relationship style and whether or not you have ever engaged in any stalking type behaviours. In some cases it is possible that the questions may be distressing or upsetting. Support numbers will be provided at the end to help with this, however if you feel you are likely to be upset by answering questions on this topic please don't take part. If this topic has caused you any distress you can discuss this with somebody at The Samaritans. In the UK dial 08457 90 90 90 or in the Republic of Ireland dial 1850 60 90 90.
How long will it take?
It will take approximately 10 minutes of your time to complete.
What will happen to the information that you give?
The information will be stored securely and will be pooled with the information given by other participants. It will then be analysed to look for statistical relationships between relationship behaviour, individual differences and stalking behaviour. These results will then be written up in my dissertation.
Who to contact for more information?
Scott McMillan at smcmil24@caledonian.ac.uk or my supervisor Lisa Marshall l.marshall@gcal.ac.uk.
Thank you for taking time to read this information.
