Cumberland County Local Food Survey
1. Introduction
The Sandhills Farm to Table (SF2T) Cooperative was formed in 2009-10 in Moore County, and in their second full year of operation, SF2T has more than 1200 members and 1000 subscribers to their weekly box of locally grown produce. A local food survey from Sustainable Sandhills, similar to the one you are about to complete, was the foundation the SF2T was built upon. For more information about the SF2T Cooperative, see www.sandhillsfarm2table.com.
There is growing interest in fresh local food in Cumberland and surrounding counties, and with the support of the SF2T Cooperative and partners that include the Cumberland County Cooperative Extension Service and the NC Farm Center for Innovation and Sustainability, we are seeking your input to inform the launching of a Consumer Supported Agriculture (CSA) subscription service similar to SF2T based here in Cumberland County, supplied by local farmers and serving subscribers in Cumberland and surrounding counties.
Community Supported Agriculture, or CSA, is a way for consumers to purchase locally grown, seasonal fruits and vegetables directly from farmers. A CSA works pretty much like a subscription to a magazine. You pay a fee for a weekly supply of fresh, local food. Local growers supply whatever is at its peak that week. Your subscription can be for one person or an entire family. Your box may also include other farm products such as eggs, herbs or cut flowers. CSA's help communities come together to support their local food economy, while celebrating the great taste and high nutritional value of local food.
