2011-2012 Equine Extension Programming Priorities
 

1. Introduction

 
To better serve the equine industry MSUE equine staff are asking for your input on 2011-2012 educational topics.


You will be presented with a series of topics that were identified by Michigan equine industry representatives to be of a high priority for MSUE programming efforts. You will also have the opportunity to add a new topic.

We ask that you rank your first, second and third priority as instructed.

For clarity, the specific topics will include the following:

Education in the Area of Unwanted Horses to Include:
➢ indiscriminate breeding
➢ maintaining livestock status of horses
➢ euthanasia options etc.
➢ preparing for hay/feed shortages
➢ use of Unwanted Horse Coalition educational materials

Manure Management Issues
➢ Education on ecologically-friendly manure management options (examples: bedding products, composting, incineration, etc.)
➢ Manure utilization
➢ Marketing composting
➢ Maintaining water quality

Land Use and Zoning Policies
Education and ongoing support for:
➢ Right to Farm
➢ GAAMPS: base guidelines for all of Ag. Manure management utilization. www.mi.gov/gaamps (also animal care)
➢ land use/zoning: to include elected officials that have no horse background
➢ more unified land zoning; # of horses/acre
➢ get proactive for horses before zoning is done by others

Improved Publicity for MSU Equine Programs Overall
➢ Recruitment
o High Schools
o Books/magazines
o Equine events


Equine Health – Research/Outreach
➢ Lameness
➢ Nutrition
➢ Metabolic syndrome
➢ Respiratory
➢ Viral diseases
➢ Vaccination – development, efficacy, education*
