1.5 PDH - Course Presenter: Adam T Baker, LHV Precast Inc.

This presentation is an introduction to the construction of precast concrete block retaining walls in largescale applications, such as – highway, railroad, commercial and waterways to name a few - architechtural CMU retaining walls provide both an attractive and structurally sound solution for projects.

The precast CMU true gravity wall system discussed can typically reach heights of 12-15 feet without the use of geogrid or other mechanical tiebacks eliminating future conflicts with utilities and with proper engineering may go as high as 40 feet.

The precast blocks can stack almost vertically maximizing the use of valuable land. Produced with air entrained 4,000 PSI concrete, which protects the block through the freeze/thaw cycles.

Large sized CMU blocks can substantially reduce labor costs. Manual labor may be replaced by a small crew and a few pieces of equipment.

Precast blocks are manufactured to product specifications to assure that the units are uniform in weight, dimensional tolerances and strength. The blocks interlock precisely without any mechanical assistance. Stone infill in the web design of the block provides 100% efficient connection strength while providing the wall with an internal drainage system.

Environmentally friendly option for applications in and
around water. Provide erosion control and shoreline
protection.
