The Vegetarian Rationale
My name is Manuel David Rodriguez and I am graduate student in the sociology department at California State University, Bakersfield. I am conducting this study for my Master’s thesis project under the supervision of the department faculty. My thesis is a study concerning the reasons why people choose a vegetarian lifestyle, the types of people that are vegetarian, and the brand of vegetarianism they identify with. The data that is collected from this study will be used to further social scientific knowledge regarding the vegetarian population.
Your participation is entirely voluntary and your identity will remain anonymous and confidential throughout the study. Your confidentiality is of utmost importance, and your responses will be used in an ethical and professional manner to further social scientific knowledge. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

I. PURPOSE OF RESEARCH PROJECT
The purpose of this research is to paint a more accurate picture of vegetarians. Therefore, the study will center on an investigation of the version of vegetarianism that people identify with, the many reasons why people choose a vegetarian lifestyle, and the types of people that become vegetarian. Participants will be asked to report which vegetarian subset they identify the most with, their reasons for choosing a vegetarian diet, and some demographic questions.
Participation in this research project requires you to complete a 14 question questionnaire that lasts approximately twenty minutes. To participate in this study, subjects must be at least 18 years of age and self-identify as vegetarian. Signing this form acknowledges your informed consent regarding the participation in the questionnaire process.
III. ANONYMITY AND CONFIDENTIALITY
The results of this study will be kept strictly confidential. The researcher will not release the names of the participants in this study to anyone without your written consent. Your names, location, and any other possible identifying information will be changed for your protection.
IV. BENEFITS OF THE INTENDED RESEARCH
Your partaking in this research project will provide information regarding the social phenomenon of vegetarianism. It may offer some insight into your own situation as well as providing understanding to those who do not practice a vegetarian lifestyle.
There will be no compensation for participation in this research project. Those who complete the questionnaire, however, will be advancing public knowledge of vetegarianism.
VI. FREEDOM TO WITHDRAW
You are free to withdraw from this project at any time without penalty.
VII. APPROVAL OF RESEARCH
This research project has been approved, as required, by the Institutional Review Board for projects involving human subjects at California State University, Bakersfield and by the Department of Sociology.
