The Women's Leadership Institute of Mount Mary College is committed to the development of the full potential of women as transformational leaders; this includes building on women's ability to influence public policy and develop the skills necessary to run for office.

Next summer, the Mount Mary College Women’s Leadership Institute will host the fifth annual National Education for Women's Leadership Wisconsin (NEW Leadership™ Wisconsin) program, which is part of a national network of programs coordinated by the Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP) at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey.

NEW Leadership™ Wisconsin is a week-long, residential program designed to educate, empower, and encourage college women to take on public leadership roles. Participants will be given an opportunity to hear inspiring speakers, meet amazing women leaders, and develop leadership skills through interactive workshops and hands-on projects.

NEW Leadership™ Wisconsin presents information about a current issue and supports women as they practice issue analysis, leadership skills, public speaking and advocacy skills -- skills that can be applied in a variety of settings and for multiple purposes.

2008 and 2009 were phenomenal years for women in politics. In 2008 we had two women vying for President and Vice President, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton and Governor Sarah Palin. Although neither was ultimately elected to office, to paraphrase Senator Clinton, there are many more cracks in that "glass ceiling". In 2009 she was appointed as Secretary of State by President Barack Obama, as only the third woman secretary of state in our history. Also in 2009, New York State Court of Appeals Judge Sonia Sotomayor was confirmed to the United States Supreme Court as only the third female justice and the first Hispanic in the history of the high court. Women are filling essential leadership positions more than ever, and NEW Leadership™ Wisconsin aims to give the next generation a head start towards filling those roles.
